Fragile Item Packing Service Across East Sussex

Glassware, china, artwork, mirrors, antiques: these are the pieces that cause the most anxiety on move day, and the ones most likely to arrive damaged when packed in a hurry the night before. Bearded Bros offer a professional fragile item packing service across East Sussex, with trained packers who wrap, box and label your most vulnerable belongings before the van pulls up.

If you would rather do it yourself, our step-by-step guide to packing fragile items covers the materials and method. This page is the other option: let us do it. Book a packing quote and we will tell you exactly what it costs, or call 01273 917898.

What a fragile item packing service actually covers

A fragile packing service is not the same as our full packing service. It is a targeted job: one or two packers arrive at your property, usually the day before your move, and work through the rooms where the breakable and high-value items live. They bring the materials with them. You do not need to source a thing.

At Bearded Bros the standard materials for fragile packing include double-walled boxes in the right sizes for plates, glasses and ornaments, bubble wrap for individual item wrapping, packing paper for void fill and surface protection, foam roll for mirrors and framed artwork, and cell divider kits for glassware. Wardrobe boxes are available for hanging items.

Each item is wrapped and boxed differently depending on what it is:

  • Glassware and china get cell divider kits for stemware and double-walled cartons for plates and ornaments.
  • Artwork and mirrors get corner protection and dedicated mirror cartons with adjustable internal sizing.
  • Lamps and ceramics are individually wrapped in bubble wrap and nested in packing paper before boxing.
  • TVs and other electronics go into screen cartons with foam inserts where the original box is not available.
  • Antiques and valuables get extra care and, for genuinely irreplaceable pieces, a conversation about custom crating. See our guide to moving antiques and valuables for more on how we handle these.

Every box is labelled by room and by content type so the unpack at the other end takes hours rather than days. The packers work to a room-by-room plan agreed with you beforehand.

Only need some rooms packed? Part-packing explained

Not every move needs a full pack, and a lot of our East Sussex customers do not want one. Our part-packing option covers fragile and kitchen items only. Everything else, clothes, books, general household items, you pack yourself in your own time.

It is a popular choice for a simple reason: kitchens and fragile items are where most moving day breakages and most moving day stress happen, and they are also the rooms people put off packing until the last minute. Handing those over to trained packers while you handle the rest keeps costs down and still protects the things most likely to get damaged.

Tell us at the quote stage which rooms you want covered and we will scope it accordingly.

Packing it yourself? Materials and where to get them

If you decide to pack some or all of your fragile items yourself, our box shop stocks the same double-walled boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper and cell divider kits our packers use, plus wardrobe boxes and crate hire if you would rather use reusable plastic crates than cardboard. Our how-to-pack-fragile-items guide walks through the method room by room.

Why East Sussex homes need professional fragile packing

East Sussex has a higher-than-average concentration of period properties: Georgian town houses in Lewes, Victorian terraces across Brighton and Hove, older flint cottages through the villages, and converted farmhouses across the Weald. These properties tend to accumulate contents to match: inherited china, antique furniture, original artwork, and glassware collected over decades.

Period properties also create access challenges. Narrow staircases, low ceilings and original doorways mean items need to be carried by hand rather than slid, which puts more stress on packaging. A wine glass that survives a straight run in a modern flat can crack on a tight staircase turn if the box is not packed firmly enough to stop internal movement.

Bearded Bros have been moving homes across East Sussex since 2013. The team knows the access constraints in the streets around the Lewes Conservation Area, the narrow carriageways of Cliffe and School Hill, and the Victorian layouts that are common through Brighton and Hove. That local knowledge shapes how the packers approach each job.

How our fragile item packing service works

  1. Request a quote. Fill in the online quote form or call 01273 917898. Tell us which rooms have fragile items and give us a rough sense of the volume: one set of kitchen china is very different from a house full of antiques.
  2. We confirm the packing visit. For most jobs this is the day before your removal. We confirm the crew size, the materials needed, and the start time.
  3. Packers arrive with all materials. No trip to the box shop required unless you want one. We bring everything to your door.
  4. Room-by-room pack. The team works through the agreed rooms, wrapping and boxing each item, labelling every box by room and content type, with fragile boxes clearly marked fragile-up.
  5. Loaded last on, first off. Fragile boxes are loaded into the van last and positioned so they come off first, in a designated area away from general furniture.
  6. Handover. Before the packers leave, you walk through the packed items together. Any questions about specific pieces are answered on the spot.

Common mistakes when packing fragile items yourself

  • Using single-walled boxes for heavy ceramics. The base gives way under the weight of stacked china and the contents drop onto the van floor.
  • Packing glasses upright. Glasses packed upright concentrate all the road vibration through the rim, which is the weakest point. Pack them inverted in cell dividers.
  • Leaving void space in boxes. A box that rattles is a box where something will break. Fill every gap with packing paper.
  • Wrapping in newspaper. Newsprint ink transfers to ceramics and porous stone and does not come off cleanly. Use plain packing paper.
  • Packing too heavy. A box of books is manageable. A box of books with a layer of china on top is a back injury and a breakage waiting to happen. Keep fragile boxes light enough to carry safely.

Insurance and accreditation

Goods packed by our team are covered under goods-in-transit insurance for the removal itself. Bearded Bros are accredited by the British Association of Removers (BAR) and are Move Assured, and if a dispute ever cannot be resolved directly, the Furniture and Home Improvement Ombudsman provides an independent route to take it further.

If you need storage between packing and moving, our storage service and combined removals and storage option both operate under appropriate cover.

Which East Sussex areas does the service cover?

Bearded Bros cover fragile item packing across East Sussex as part of a removal or as a standalone packing visit, including Lewes and Haywards Heath, plus Brighton, Hove, Newhaven, Seaford, Uckfield, Hastings and the villages across the Weald and South Downs. We also handle office removals where fragile equipment or display items need the same careful treatment. If your property is not listed, call us: if it is within reasonable reach of our Brighton base on Springfield Road, we can almost certainly help.

FAQs

Do you offer fragile item packing as a standalone service, or only as part of a removal?

We offer it as a standalone service. If you have a separate removal company handling the van work, or if you are self-moving in a hired vehicle and want your fragile items professionally packed, we can send a packing team to your property without taking on the removal itself. Book via the quote form and specify that you need packing only.

What is the difference between full packing, part-packing and fragile-only packing?

Full packing covers every room. Part-packing covers fragile and kitchen items only, with everything else packed by you. Fragile-only packing covers just the breakables, glassware, china, artwork, mirrors and similar, and is often added on top of a removal you are otherwise doing yourself. See our what's included in a removals quote guide for how this is priced.

How far in advance do I need to book fragile packing?

For most jobs we need a minimum of two to three working days' notice to confirm a packing visit. During busy periods (late spring and summer, and the weeks around school half-terms) demand increases significantly, so the earlier you book the better. If your move date is already fixed, contact us as soon as you know it.

What materials do you use and are they included in the price?

All materials are included in the quote we give you: double-walled boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, foam roll, cell dividers for glassware, and mirror cartons. We do not charge for materials separately and then surprise you with a materials invoice. The quote you get is the price you pay, subject to any scope changes agreed before the packing visit.

Are my items insured during the packing process?

Yes. Goods packed by our team are covered under goods-in-transit insurance for the removal itself. If you are using us for packing only and a separate company for the move, confirm the insurance position with your removal company: goods-in-transit cover usually applies from the point of loading, not from the point of packing.

What if my move date gets pushed back after packing?

If completion is delayed after your fragile items are packed, our storage service can hold everything securely until you are ready. See our guide on what happens when completion is delayed for how this works.
